Space management specialist sponsors staff to study

PiMS Workspace, a leading UK provider of tailored accommodation solutions, is sending staff back to school, in response to a national shortage of available trained personnel.

As a specialist in workplace planning, design and strategic management, PiMS relies upon its league of skilled consultants to optimise office space for organisations across the world.  Instead of struggling to acquire experienced staff, Managing Director Martin Atkinson is investing in the future of existing employees.

“We are very lucky at PiMS to have a team of fantastic people, who care about the business as much as I do,” explains Atkinson.  “By covering the costs for them to gain further qualifications, I’m avoiding the sorts of staffing problems faced by the facilities management industry as a whole.

Twenty-four year-old Erin Collier is the first PiMS employee to benefit from the initiative.  Recognising her creative flair, Atkinson has covered costs for her to study part-time for a BA Hons degree in Interior Design and Technology at the London Metropolitan University.

“This is a brilliant opportunity,” Collier Says.  “The prospect of loans and debts put me off further education after leaving school.  Now I can go to university and enjoy my course, safe in the knowledge that I have job security when it’s over.”

According to a new survey from the International Facility Management Association, the FM industry has an ageing workforce, with a desperate need for young professionals to fill this growing field.  With base salaries rising fast to attract new workers, Atkinson predicts this sort of scheme could soon become commonplace.

“By sponsoring staff to study, we can tailor our team’s skills to fit our needs and hopefully maintain a loyal workforce to secure the success of the company.”
